The term browser generally refers to a web browser, a program used to access and view websites. Modern browsers can interpret and display HTML pages, JavaScript, CSS, multimedia and a host of other content.
The first widely-used graphical web browser, Mosaic, was developed at the National Center for Super Computing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign.
The most popular browsers and their market shares are:
- Microsoft Internet Explorer: 49.61%
- Firefox: 17.96%
- Chrome: 14.78%
- Safari: 11.27% (mobile and desktop)
- Android Browser: 2.51% (mobile)
